The Sun Company (‘åV) is also called Doh Sun or DaXin was founded by two brothers: Cai Xing and Cai Chang on 10th January 1936 on the corner of People's Square (on Nanking Road at the junction of Xizang Road) on Nanjing Road 830 (Nowadays it is 800 East Nanjing Road). Towering at 10 stories, the shop was the largest of the four big companies with lifts and central heating, although it was built with yellow brick rather than stone.
The big attraction of Sun Company was the escalators from the ground floor to the second floor and from the second floor to the third floor with thousands of people coming just to watch or try the escalators.
"In order to avoid congestion, tickets are sold at 40 cents each for mounting the escalators. The tickets can be used when buying things for the value of 40 cents."
As in other department stores, the first four floors were used for selling products. Offices, restaurants, and amusement centers occupied the upper floors. Regular exhibitions were held for paintings and calligraphy, which was a specialty of the Sun Company
There was an enrertainment floor in the building where there was a casino where guests and customers could gamble.
During the Sino-Japanese war, Sun Company was occupied by the Japanese. The company closed before the nationalization of property began in the 1950s. In 1958, the name was changed into Shanghai Number 1 Department Store. ( Conrad Frost)
