| The Auditorium opened on February 7, 1930, helding the first Jai-alai match. Shanghai. Jai-alai Auditorium was located in the corner Avenue Joffre with 439 Avenue du Roi Albert (in the French Concession). It was called "Central Auditorium"or "Jai-alai Auditorium" although it is also known by the French name "Parc des Sports".In 1934, the auditorium was renovated and expanded to seat more than 3,000 people, 4,000 employees and installed air-conditioning, heating and a circular bar. The game became one of the most popular indoor sports. The auditorium also hosted "boxing, skating, tennis, and athletic games".There was a system of betting money on winning matches.
In addition there were in the auditorium other forms of gambling.
With the Japanese invasion in August 13, 1937 the game remained active in the evenings in Auditorium. However the enthusiasm for the game was waning until the Auditorium closure in 1944, due to the escalation of the civil war. |
