The Shanghai Club was the principal men's club for British residents of Shanghai, which was founded in 1861. The club was originally named "The Correspondent's Club".Was the most exclusive club in Old Shanghai.. The Chinese people were not allowed to be member. The new building at No. 3, The Bund was opened in January 1910. The Shanghai Club building is a six-storey building and was a massive white marble building in the neo-classical style. The total building footprint is 1,811 square metres, while total floor area is 9,280 square metres.The main marble-floored hall, over 40 feet high, had six Ionic columns . .The club was the second home for the rich and powerful people of the International Settlement and contained all that was needed by its members, including card room, writing room, ball room,bowling alleys, billiard rooms, a barber, restaurants and the long bar, supposedly the longest bar in the world. The top floors where occupied by 40 en-suite rooms for resident members. On the outbreak of war in the Pacific in 1941, the Shanghai Club was closed and occupied by the Japanese occupation force until the end of the war. In 1949, the building was expropriated by the new Communist government of Shanghai. |
