| Travelers who like to gamble are now able to indulge their penchant at a new casino in Budapest that has the financial backing of Hungary's Communist Government. The casino is for foreign visitors only; Hungarians are barred from the tables by currency restrictions.
Part of the casino, which opened April 25 on the fourth floor of the Hilton Hotel, has a medieval atmosphere; the blackjack room is in a part of the building converted from a 14th-century tower that rises near what was a former Benedictine abbey, the remains of which were incorporated in the hotel complex. A tower restaurant and one of the Hilton's nightclubs were remodeled to serve as the casino.
There are four roulette tables, three blackjack tables and a table each for boule and baccarat. An adjoining room accommodates 32 slot machines and a snack bar.
At the gambling tables chips are exchanged only for West German marks, but players may exchange any Western currency for marks, according to an official of the state-run Danubius Hotels and Spa Company, which owns the hotel, though it is operated by Hilton International. Hungarians are kept away from the tables because of stringent regulations prohibiting them from buying foreign currency. Few, if any, other East Europeans are expected at the casino for similar reasons. (The New York Times, May 10, 1981) |
